Employees may set aside pre-tax dollars to cover the cost of anticipated eligible expenses for Mass-transit and parkingTotalBen currently offers three options for administrating a pre-tax commuter plan under IRC §132(f). Depending on your demographics and corporate culture, you can choose one that fits best. Alternatively, choose to offer more than option, such as MetroCards for the employees that commuter in NYC and another option for those outside NYC.
Transit Benefit Options (Cost versus Effort)
MetroCards
Employer makes the most amount of money, but may have greater effort implementing the plan. Employer is responsible for solicitation, procurement & distribution of MetroCards each cycle and payroll updates.

Debit Cards
Employer makes some money, but may have has less effort implementing the plan. Employer is responsible for monthly accounting of outstanding cards and remitting employee payroll contributions.

Payroll Integration
Cost neutral to employer, but the least amount of effort. All aspects handled, including reporting monthly changes directly to the payroll service. Employer reports employee terminations.

| Debit Cards | Newly eligible employees must be enrolled via the online portal prior to the 13th (aside from Dec/Jan enrollments) and payment must be received prior to the 21st, for cards to be mailed out and received prior to the effective date next month. |
| Payroll Integration | Enrollment forms must be received by 2pm, last business day of the month. Enrollments are effective the first of the following month. |
